20T Tank Wagon, Sunderland Gas Company – Era 2/3

The Sunderland Gas Company dates back to the mid-19th century and operated until May 1949. In the 20th century the company’s main gas works was located in Hendon. This example is typical of the tank wagon traffic that would be found on British railways in the 20th century.

Tank wagons were divided into class A and Class B with the less common Class A wagons being built to contain more volatile substances.
